Give

"Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good
measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over [with no
space left for more]. For with the standard of measurement you use
[when you do good to others], it will be measured to you in return.”
    (Luke 6:38, AMP)

Cheerfully? Grudgingly? What is your attitude about giving? And remember the giving has a multitude of contexts: time, money, talent, words of help and encouragement, etc. Do you give? Maybe the more appropriate questions are
what do you give, how do you define 'give', and what's your standard?

"Don’t pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults—
unless, of course, you want the same treatment. Don’t condemn
those who are down; that hardness can boomerang. Be easy on
people; you’ll find life a lot easier. Give away your life; you’ll find
life given back, but not merely given back—given back with bonus
and blessing. Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets
    generosity.” (Luke 6:37-38, MSG)

As you can see, the Amplified states it somewhat differently than the Message. Actually, I think they both expand our understanding about how we look at the word, 'Give'.

The Amplified tells us that when we give, it will also be given to us. However, the 'return' is far greater than the initial act.... and yet it also says the our 'standard of measurement' is the basis for our return. HOW we give as well as the what we give is the standard of return. Do you only give when asked... or are you a giver by nature, grateful for what you have and willing to openly share it with others? I honestly believe our attitude plays an enormous role in what we receive because we have to have eyes that see. It isn't a quid pro quo.

These same verses in the Message Bible also reinforce this thinking. It tells us, among other thoughts, that 'Giving, not getting, is the way.' It should be our mindset, our context in giving. Generosity begets generosity. There are 2 verses that speaks and defines 'generosity'.

"For if the eagerness [to give] is there, it is acceptable according to
what one has, not according to what he does not have."
   (2 Corinthians 8:12, AMP)

"Now [remember] this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly,
and he who sows generously [that blessings may come to others]
will also reap generously [and be blessed]. Let each one give
[thoughtfully and with purpose] just as he has decided in his heart,
not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver
[and delights in the one whose heart is in his gift]."
    (2 Corinthians 9:6-7, AMP)

Do these verses describe you and when and how you give? I believe that as we give thoughtfully, with purpose, as we decide (purpose) in our hearts that we will be blessed in return. I would also argue that focusing on what we get is not the right attitude. We need to be aware, with eyes open to see our blessing, but we shouldn't give to get, in my opinion. WE need to improve our attitude of gratitude because this will define how we give.
