Majoring on the minors

Do we do this? If it's one of our 'pet' beliefs, and not necessarily a widely held one, will we push its adoption to the max? Why? If it is critical, wouldn't it be a 'major' rather than a minor? Do remember we aren't infallible and, as such, can be wrong. Our interpretation (assumption?) can be a 'mis'. And saying that 'God told you so' is not proof if He hasn't also told others (2 Peter 1: 20-21). Remember too that if you are right, you have scripture that confirms your point and other scripture that supports it as well. You don't need to 'defend' your point.

"So come on, let’s leave the preschool finger painting exercises on
Christ and get on with the grand work of art. Grow up in Christ.
The basic foundational truths are in place: turning your back on
“salvation by self-help” and turning in trust toward God; baptismal
instructions; laying on of hands; resurrection of the dead; eternal
judgment. God helping us, we’ll stay true to all that. But there’s so
much more. Let’s get on with it!" (Hebrews 6:1-3, MSG)

[Sometimes the Message translations put the thought more forcefully. 'Let's get on with it!' is a perfect example.] What's this verse telling us and how does it relate to this topic? There are a couple of points... 1. The verse is telling us to 'get on'. We've all had the basic teachings and they are our foundation. We all hold the same ones. Do we realize this? Do we trust the learning in ourselves as well as in others? It also identifies the foundational instructions that we all can hold in one accord.

We should always looks to our 'sameness' of beliefs to underscore how we relate to one another. THEN we look at those areas that we may not share. Always 'judge' them against the foundational components. If you feel that what you've learned is also important... then present it in that way.. Share. Not make it a bone of contention, separation. If it is crucial then the truth will present itself in such a way as to be understood.

In the final analysis... too often disagreements among brothers and sisters really are minor issues - one person's understanding, experiences versus another's. We shouldn't let this separate us. Remember, together we are the church and have an incredibly important assignment to complete - touching the world with the truth (majors) of Jesus.

[Also... nothing pleases our arch enemy more than when brothers and sisters in the Lord grumble and fight and don't display the one behavior, attitude that we are commanded to do... Love.]

Whose in charge?

Ever wonder about this? Or since there is a sufficient amount of drama and chaos that whoever should be in charge... isn't. Who should? Should you be in charge? Maybe you should but you don't have the authority? Does this only happen in work situation or volunteer ones as well ... in your family? All of those are fraught with power issues and jockeying for control. So... what do you do when you are enmeshed in these situations? Do you try and bring a bit of organization and sanity to it? And how did that go? Do you simply throw up your hands? Do you look to see how you can be an advocate for a proactive approach, regardless if you are the leader or not?

Perhaps an additional question should be - in the absence of (visible) leadership, is this a role you want? are willing to accept? take the responsibility? Actually... what does 'being in charge' mean? It may not be what you think. If you think that glamour and prestige automatically occur - think again. If you think it means that you're first... wrong! Especially when you are the leader, you are suppose to direct, to challenge, to help those who are being led to do their best which will also mean helping them share their giftings for the benefit of all and assisting them to experience ownership in (fill in the blank).

"Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit [through factional
motives, or strife], but with [an attitude of] humility [being neither
arrogant nor self-righteous], regard others as more important than
yourselves. Do not merely look out for your own personal interests,
but also for the interests of others." (Philippians 2:3-4, AMP)

Whoever's in charge... they juggle a number of important considerations: the success of the project, the people involved and their involvement/ownership of what's going on, the best plan to accomplish the goals, how to help people maximize their gifting for the success, etc. The 'leader's' personal wants and desires come in last. Leaders also lead by example - they don't issue orders from a safe distance. Leaders surround themselves with excellent and gifted people and then give them the authority over parts of the project that are relevant. These are only some of the characteristics and qualities of good leaders.

We've all be in situations that the people in charge are the least equipped to lead. That is incredibly frustrating for those who are subordinate but actually it's also difficult for the one attempting to lead. If you are out of your depth, the wisest though most humbling thing to do is to admit and ask for help. Always look to your motivation, your goals in making decisions as to what you do and when.

We do have a guide in scripture that underscores who we should be and how we should act... if we are 'in charge':

"Calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, “You know that those who
are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their
powerful men exercise authority over them [tyrannizing them]. But
this is not how it is among you; instead, whoever wishes to become
great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wishes to be
first and most important among you must be slave of all. 45 For even
the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give
His life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:42-45, AMP)

I'm my own worst enemy

You too? Do you find, far more often than you like, that sometimes you shoot yourself in the foot of cut off your nose to spite your face? WHY!!!? Why do we do this! And never respond with - I'm only human. Duh. Of course you're human! Not to be despised or used as a excuse. Never forget that God breathed the breath of life into us! YOU have been made in the image of the Creator of the universe!

Why we engage in these self-defeating behaviors is not a simple answer... which means that the change/correction answer is not easy. There are myriad of reasons why we do this and the subsequent resolutions. However... you aren't alone in this dilemma. Even Paul found himself bemoaning this fact.

"For I do not understand my own actions [I am baffled and bewildered
by them]. I do not practice what I want to do, but I am doing the very
thing I hate [and yielding to my human nature, my worldliness—my
    sinful capacity]." (Romans 7:15, AMP)

For me, Paul's acknowledgement of his condition lets me know that I'm not alone in this. And it gives me hope that the Lord can still use me in my unrefined condition... right where I am. But... You do realize that you don't need to continue doing this... at least as often or for as long. I think that a big part of our dilemma is that we don't have a good perspective of ourselves.

It really isn't always a poor self image as much as it isn't a correct or complete one. Yes we have flaws, yes we sin and make mistakes, yes we aren't worthy, yes, yes, yes. But that isn't the whole picture of us. We are made in God's image, we have His breath that gave us life, we are trying to become our best, yes, yes, yes. Point: if God hasn't given up on you... why should you! If you are really trying to do and be your best - that's all He's asking. He never wanted us to stay in the condition we were in when He saved us, so He is always present to help us.

"For we do not have a High Priest who is unable to sympathize and
understand our weaknesses and temptations, but One who has been
tempted [knowing exactly how it feels to be human] in every respect
as we are, yet without [committing any] sin." (Hebrews 4:15, AMP)

Turn to Him and He will give you peace, rest, encouragement, and an understanding that should fortify us to continue. Don't buy the lies and half truths. Discover who you are and act on it, because then you can be your gift to Him.

The 'every day'

What does your 'every day' look like? Does it make you shudder? Are you bored with it? See no glamour? Do you think that others' every days are more exciting, more fulfilling than yours? How do you populate your 'every day'? Because in the last as well as the first analysis - it is you defines (who and what) your every day. And remember - the days don't all have to be the same nor excite-less.

If your every day is a same o, same o, then change the order of what you feel HAS to be part. No, don't do a major dinner for breakfast... unless you want to. If you have others living their lives with you, you'll probably need to consult with them on the shared components. But take a long look at you and your every days - is a change going to be a positive option? What is not included now that needs inclusion and are there 'things' that have a place but don't need to be daily? What do you do with any 'down time' in the day?

Yes, it does begin with our attitudes and what they are telling us about our selves and time. If you aren't beginning your day with a sense of adventure or anticipation about what could happen, then I think you start your day by shooting yourself in your attitude foot. I remember a time when I was basically grousing about the never changing life I was leading. Yoo Hoo... it's my life... only I could do something about it and if it didn't begin with my attitude, then it really didn't begin.

"I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But
I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously
reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I
count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal,
where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running,
and I’m not turning back." (Philippians 3:13-14, MSG)

What does scripture have to do with 'every day'. Everything... at least for me. When I begin my day with the Lord in prayer or study, then my attitude immediately is different than when I don't. I am more positive, more energized when I start this way. Just a recommendation. When I realize:

"It is because of the Lord’s lovingkindnesses that we are not consumed,
Because His [tender] compassions never fail
    They are new every morning;
Great and beyond measure is Your faithfulness."
    (Lamentations 3:22-23, AMP)

If we engage in a new every morning... if we rely on what the Word teaches us, then we too can be new every morning. We can be creative and involved in our day because, yesterday is no more and tomorrow hasn't come. So let's enjoy our day regardless of its routine. Are your eyes on your goal? At the end of the day, what will make you happy. Your 'happy' needs to be woven into the fabric of your every day.

Defending

"Use your heads as you live and work among outsiders. Don’t miss
a trick. Make the most of every opportunity. Be gracious in your
speech. The goal is to bring out the best in others in a conversation,
not put them down, not cut them out." (Colossians 4:5-6, MSG)

Have you ever been in the position of having to defend your faith? How did you feel? While the situation may not have been pleasant, did your faith increase because of what you did... and how you expressed yourself?

"If with heart and soul you’re doing good, do you think you can be
stopped? Even if you suffer for it, you’re still better off. Don’t give
the opposition a second thought. Through thick and thin, keep your
hearts at attention, in adoration before Christ, your Master. Be ready
to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you’re living the way you
are, and always with the utmost courtesy." (1 Peter 3:15, MSG)

This identifies the reason and your best way of responding when you are in a position to defend. I believe that the reason I'm attempting to address this subject is based in my belief that the Church is under attack. It's not that the Church is a threat and, for most Christians, they do not advocate or participate in any 'civil disobedience'. BUT, for many opposition people, the mere fact Christianity exists is an offense in their eyes. Controversial statement? Really????

   "I solemnly charge you ... preach the word [as an official messenger];
be ready when the time is right and even when it is not [keep your
sense of urgency, whether the opportunity seems favorable or un-
favorable, whether convenient or inconvenient, whether welcome or
unwelcome]; correct [those who err in doctrine or behavior], warn
[those who sin], exhort and encourage [those who are growing
toward spiritual maturity], with inexhaustible patience and
[faithful] teaching." (2 Timothy 4:1-2, AMP - mine)

I think that correct, warn, exhort, encourage are the best definitions of 'defend'. We can never compromise our defense nor can we be belligerent. Our goals is to convince so HOW we go about defending is critical. We never want to be viewed as hypocrites - saying one thing in one place and the opposite in another. Actually, when we do this, what kind of testimony or witness are we providing to our newer brothers and sisters in the Lord?

In terms of giving a defense for the hope in you, I would suggest that it's wise to know who you are speaking to and who they are. Listen to their words, their attacks, their understanding so you will have an entry for correction and understanding. Just remember that in your defense you may be speaking to their wall of defense. Personally, I tend to turn the discussion by asking them questions. Never use words that are not in the attacker's frame of reference, they won't understand.

"But the natural [unbelieving] man does not accept the things [the
teachings and revelations] of the Spirit of God, for they are foolish-
ness [absurd and illogical] to him; and he is incapable of understand-
ing them, because they are spiritually discerned and appreciated, [and
he is unqualified to judge spiritual matters]." (1 Corinthians 2:14, AMP)

What's our purpose, our motivation in our defending? It should be to bring light. How we go about doing this determines if we are heard and the message is understood. I'm not attempting to tell you what to do, I'm suggesting that you
know and are prepared to defend.

There always are consequences

Newton's Third Law of Motion:

"A force is a push or a pull that acts upon an object as a results of
its interaction with another object. There are two forces resulting
from this interaction - these two forces are called action and reaction
forces and are the subject of Newton's third law of motion.  ...
'For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.'

Another way of saying this is that for every word or behavior we do, there is always a consequence - sometimes according to our plan/hope, sometimes not. But my take on Newton's law is to be prepared, have known options at various stages in any project - don't be unaware. And this is my application in all areas of my life... or at least I try to.

"Don’t be misled: No one makes a fool of God. What a person plants,
he will harvest. The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs
of others—ignoring God!—harvests a crop of weeds. All he’ll have to
show for his life is weeds! But the one who plants in response to God,
letting God’s Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real
life, eternal life." (Galatians 6:7, MSG)

If you haven't realized by now, there are always consequences to what we say and do. The old... 'what I meant', doesn't work when the only result of our words and actions are the negative consequences. What you sow you truly reap so you shouldn't be surprised.

As a context:

"I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today, that I have
set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse; therefore,
you shall choose life in order that you may live, you and your
    descendants," (Deuteronomy 30:19, AMP)

"If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue
from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies." (1 Peter 3:10)

"Do not let unwholesome [foul, profane, worthless, vulgar] words ever
come out of your mouth, but only such speech as is good for building
up others, according to the need and the occasion, so that it will be a
blessing to those who hear [you speak]." (Ephesians 4:29, AMP)

"But whatever [word] comes out of the mouth comes from the heart,
and this is what defiles and dishonors the man." (Matthew 15:19, AMP)

The Message Bible states the Matthew verse as: "But what comes out of the mouth gets its start in the heart. It’s from the heart that we vomit up evil..."
And just as good produces good consequences, evil produces evil consequences. Bottom line - every action, every word is a seed sown and it will produce a result.

"The [intrinsically] good man produces what is good and honorable
and moral out of the good treasure [stored] in his heart; and the
[intrinsically] evil man produces what is wicked and depraved out
of the evil [in his heart]; for his mouth speaks from the overflow
of his heart." (Luke 6:45, AMP)

The reason that I am presenting so many scriptures related to this subject is because it is incredibly crucial and with so many warnings given us, we should be aware. Remember, we will stand to give an accounting for our words (Matthew 12:36). That shouldn't cause us to fear, but it should cause us to take stock of what we say, to be intentional. And it should be a check for us to be very aware of the ramifications, the consequences from our words and actions. Not fear... focus.

It's not a popularity contest

The Lord says He is coming for a church that is without stain or wrinkle  (Ephesians 5:27)! In my opinion... we're not even close... unless the definition of 'church' is changed (or the meaning of without stain or wrinkle is).  Do you understand who the church is?! Do you have any idea about how to get to the state of 'without stain or wrinkle'?

"For this is contained in Scripture: 'Behold, I am laying in Zion a
chosen stone, a precious (honored) Cornerstone, And he who
believes in Him [whoever adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him]
will never be disappointed [in his expectations].This precious value,
then, is for you who believe [in Him as God’s only Son—the Source
of salvation]; but for those who disbelieve, The [very] stone which
the builders rejected Has become the chief Cornerstone,' and, '
stone of stumbling and a rock of offense';for they stumble because
they disobey the word [of God], and to this they [who reject Him as
    Savior] were also appointed.
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a consecrated nation,
a [special] people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim
the excellencies [the wonderful deeds and virtues and perfections] of
Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.Once you
were not a people [at all], but now you are God’s people; once you had
not received mercy, but now you have received mercy." (1 Peter 2:6-9, AMP)

In my thinking it's this last verse that I consider the most critical. The beginning verses sets the context. Whether or not YOU consider yourself a chosen race, royal priesthood, special people... the Father does! Why? So we can be the models, the visible recipients of the Lord's grace and favor and so He can demonstrate through our lives, what being His family means.

It's as We who proclaim the excellencies of Him who called us out of darkness that we are, demonstrate (salt and) light. Never forget the phrase that we may be the only Bible someone reads - it's who we are, what we do, what we say that may be precisely what's needed at that moment. Also remember that some plant, some water, and some harvest. We may not know the impact of our who and what but we should never underestimate who we've been created to be and do. It also isn't of importance which role we happen to occupy - what's important is that we fulfill our responsibility. (My bias is that we all inhabit all of the roles at different times.)

Though it could be argued, but I think the church at some point shifted it's priorities to being 'socially acceptable'. According to whose definition? The world's? Not a particularly good foundation since the 'requirements' keep shifting and changing. Besides... are we here to be socially acceptable? How can we be? Look at the first century church - were they socially acceptable? Or did they lay down their lives for their beliefs?

"Jesus called the crowd together with His disciples, and said to them,
'If anyone wishes to follow Me [as My disciple], he must deny himself
[set aside selfish interests], and [a]take up his cross [expressing a
willingness to endure whatever may come] and follow Me [believing
in Me, conforming to My example in living and, if need be, suffering
or perhaps dying because of faith in Me]." (Mark 8:34, AMP -
    additionally Matthew 10:38, 16:24; Luke 9:23, 14:27)

Not really compatible with socially acceptable. Jesus is our older brother, our model/example and He never attempted to conform to anything that would compromise His message. And if He didn't, why should the church or ourselves do differently?

Being popular is not the focus... especially since - you can never please all the people, all the time. Too often compromise is the method and in this instance, compromise is framed in denial of who we are, Whose we are, and what we are. And NEVER use Paul's comment (1 Corinthians 9: 19-23) about being all things to all people in order to save some as your excuse. That's not what Paul was meaning. He never would advocate diminishing in any way Who the Lord is. We don't water down our message.

Being a Christian is a very serious undertaking. He always accepts us just as we are... but I would argue that He has no intention of leaving us there. You don't dabble in Christianity. It is a commitment, a lifestyle... fortunately you always have someone with you to help.

"I will never [under any circumstances] desert you [nor give you up
nor leave you without support, nor will I in any degree leave you
helpless], nor will I forsake or let you down or relax My hold on you
    [assuredly not]!” (Hebrews 13:5, AMP)

Choice

Do you appreciate that you have been chosen... and by God!? You have been invited to accept His invitation to become a member of His family. However, You have to accept His choosing. Both have to occur.

"Blessed and worthy of praise be the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in
the heavenly realms in Christ, just as [in His love] He chose us
in Christ [actually selected us for Himself as His own] before the
foundation of the world, so that we would be holy [that is,
consecrated, set apart for Him, purpose-driven] and blameless
in His sight. In love He predestined and lovingly planned for us
to be adopted to Himself as [His own] children through Jesus
Christ, in accordance with the kind intention and good pleasure
of His will—to the praise of His glorious grace and favor, which
He so freely bestowed on us in the Beloved [His Son, Jesus Christ]."
    (Ephesians 1:3-6, AMP)

"But when [in God’s plan] the proper time had fully come, God
sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the [regulations of the]
Law, so that He might redeem and liberate those who were under
the Law, that we [who believe] might be adopted as sons [as God’s
children with all rights as fully grown members of a family]. And
because you [really] are [His] sons, God has sent the Spirit of His
Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba! Father!” Therefore you are
no longer a slave (bond-servant), but a son; and if a son, then also
an heir through [the gracious act of] God [through Christ]."
    (Galatians 4:4-7, AMP)

Predestined? Absolutely. I would argue that everyone is predestined to be part of the Family of God. The difference is that not everyone accepts this, does not choose to activate being chosen. It truly is our choice to act on being chosen or to reject it. Part of this understanding, I think, is based in what we believe about Free Will.

What do you think? Do you have Free Will? Whether you exercise it or not... you do! However, there is no scripture that speaks directly to this question. Yet... there are, by implication, verses that relate to this. Two of them are:

"It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make
sure that you don’t use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you
want to do and destroy your freedom. Rather, use your freedom to
serve one another in love; that’s how freedom grows. For everything
we know about God’s Word is summed up in a single sentence: Love
others as you love yourself. That’s an act of true freedom."
    (Galatians 5:13-14, MSG)

"I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today, that I have
set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse; therefore,
you shall choose life in order that you may live, you and your
    descendants," (Deuteronomy 30:19, AMP)

Since we are told to renew our minds (Romans 12:2), this must mean that we do have choices. Otherwise, why the need to renew? If we are robots or on the other end, subject to fatalism why would we need to know, to see options, to make decisions? We wouldn't. Man is a remarkable creation. We are told things we should not do and things we should. If we have a mind then we must be able to understand. It is always our decision. And the most important one is whether or not we accept the Father's invitation to become part of His family. It is always our decision, our choice.

TRUTH

Truth is truth. Yes?! However... Truth that we see, understand, and accept is based on our Perceptions. And, our Perceptions are based in our Attitudes. And where do our Attitudes comes from? Experience. Significant People, liked and not liked, in our lives. Our Personal Learnings. Does this seem to be devolving into 'relativism'? Possibly. And that's no foundation! That's not how we should be building our character, our beliefs and sharing them. There HAS to be some relevant, viable, and unchanging foundation.

"For I am the Lord, I do not change [but remain faithful to My covenant
with you]; that is why you, O sons of Jacob, have not come to an end."
    (Malachi 3:6, AMP)

"Jesus Christ is [eternally changeless, always] the same yesterday and
today and forever." (Hebrews 13:8, AMP)

"But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the
truth [full and complete truth]. For He will not speak on His own
initiative, but He will speak whatever He hears [from the Father—
the message regarding the Son], and He will disclose to you what is
to come [in the future]." (John 16:13, AMP)

"All Scripture is God-breathed [given by divine inspiration] and is
profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction [of
error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness
[learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and
privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral
courage]; so that the man of God may be complete and proficient,
outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work."
    (2 Timothy 3:16-17, AMP)

Any questions? This sums up everything you need to know regarding truth. This is where you can place your trust and confidence. We have to act from a foundation of truth or we truly are like the shifting sands (Matthew 7:24-27). Footing can become impossible in shifting sands and if it's based on the last person we talked with, then it really isn't ours - we are only parroting someone else. And just how trustworthy is this?

Opinion can always be shared. But it should also be identified as this. If you don't have corroborating scriptures (in context) supporting your statements then you have opinion (not to be despised, merely acknowledged). Also, if you are in relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit then you also will have a stronger basis for what you believe... and why. But never say - 'God told me (fill in the blank)' unless you are convinced and willing to act on it. One of the best tests for you (and others) about whether this did originate from God is to test the spirits (1 John 4:1). If we're instructed to do something, we could end up skinning our knees if we don't.

I think I've made a strong case for how you can know, what you can do when you are seeking truth. Truth is what we should be sharing and standing and walking on - truth. Truth will never change it's mind, will never betray, will always be constant and consistent. Honestly... truth IS truth. All we need do is to find the source and act on it - boldly, confidently. And we have the source we can rely on! Everything is covered. All we need do is to believe.

NOT condemned

I was a fairly new Christian when I read:

"Therefore there is now no condemnation [no guilty verdict, no
punishment] for those who are in Christ Jesus [who believe in
Him as personal Lord and Savior]. For the law of the Spirit of
life [which is] in Christ Jesus [the law of our new being] has set
you free from the law of sin and of death." (Romans 8:1-2, AMP)

WOW! Let those 2 verses sink in... they speaking directly to YOU!
The requirement: those who are in Christ Jesus, believing in Him as personal Lord and Savior.
The reward: no condemnation, see free from the law of sin and death.

This is what we automatically receive when we accept Jesus as our Lord - believing in Him, who He was, what He did, and what He continues to be and do.

However, the catch - we can no longer act as the poor 'wretch' we were. We can no longer casually act and speak. Yes we were accepted just as we were but we aren't left in that state. We are a new creation! 1 Corinthians 5:17-21 AMP

"Therefore if anyone is in Christ [that is, grafted in, joined to Him by
faith in Him as Savior], he is a new creature [reborn and renewed by
the Holy Spirit]; the old things [the previous moral and spiritual
condition] have passed away. Behold, new things have come [because
spiritual awakening brings a new life]." (v. 17)

"... old things... passed away... new things have come..." This is who we are now. Perhaps unfamiliar, perhaps shakily, but how exciting. We can leave that old person and become a new one. However, this is something WE do, it is always our decision - we are never forced.

And putting off the old (Ephesians 4:22-24), the familiar isn't easy... it can be hard because those that populated our lives may not understand or accept what has happened in our life. Putting on the new can be difficult as well because we are still learning, still discovering who we are as this new creation.  BUT we can do it because we are equipped to do this. Always remember that the Lord will never ask us to do something we can't!

Verse, 19 tells us:

"...that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not
counting people’s sins against them [but canceling them]. And He has
committed to us the message of reconciliation [that is, restoration to
    favor with God]."

We have a very important message and charge - bringing the life-saving message of reconciliation. It is a beautiful message and critical to help people come into the light. Thus, our feelings of condemnation have no place. It may be easier to think this of ourselves, but with this great opportunity to touch lives, to make a difference we can't afford to look at ourselves as who we were.

These scriptures: Romans 8:1-2, 2 Corinthians 5:17-21, and Ephesians 4:22-24 are our foundation to act, speak, be, do. It is our privilege.  Our passion in sharing with others will increase as our understanding of not being condemned grows. Being not condemned is not arrogance, actually it should bring humility.

Comparing

How many times have I railed (intransitive verb) against comparing? All the time! When you think about it... what does comparing do for you? After you've done your comparing... do you feel better about yourself? I would argue that the results of comparing is never positive. So why engage in unproductive and self-defeating behavior (one rarely comes out positively in comparing)? Surely there's a purpose for you in this activity?

"Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have
been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed
with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you
must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with
your own life." (Galatians 6:4, MSG)

"If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if His love
has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the
Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care—then
do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-
spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk
your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead.
Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget your-
selves long enough to lend a helping hand." (Philippians 2:1-4, MSG)

"Test yourselves to make sure you are solid in the faith. Don’t drift
along taking everything for granted. Give yourselves regular checkups.
You need firsthand evidence, not mere hearsay, that Jesus Christ is
in you. Test it out. If you fail the test, do something about it."
    (2 Corinthians 13:5-6, MSG)

Will these scriptures end the endless comparing we do? Probably not. So what
will stop us? Trust and Confidence - in YOURSELF, who you're becoming, what you're doing, and especially Whose you are - would be my suggestion. Actually... you need to look at yourself. If you are going to do any comparing it should be in terms of yourself - have you grown? are you growing? What are YOU doing about being your best you.?

When it comes to trust and confidence, we are really talking about you... IF you know yourself and acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses, IF you focus on becoming your best you - that is the perfect starting point. There was a phrase used in a program I was watching. One of the characters recommended to another character - "... more being, less doing..." as the best mindset. Agree? If not, why not... and if you do - why?

Think about it. If your goal is to become the best you, then it isn't selfish... you aren't looking at material/carnal 'accomplishments' so there's no need to compare. 'Being in charge' or having the power isn't a focus. You can do what scripture says in Galatians, Philippians, and 2 Corinthians - don't do the don'ts and do the do's. If we weren't able to do so, we never would have been instructed this way. Comparing only gets in the way.
